My Roots
I grew up hearing stories of my grandfather’s prowess in combat. He was a commander of guerrilla resistance fighters, during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. He maintained his reputation as the Mayor Bauang, in the province of La Union (1948-1967). Now, my community looks to me to preserve his legacy.
My System
At a young age. I spent much time observing, training and seeking lessons and stories from elders in my community.
In 1996 I moved to Canada and started training locally. I explored different disciplines including American Boxing, Muay Thai, Krabi Krabong, Kung Fu, Karate, Pencak Silat, Arnis, Eskrima, Kali and traditional Filipino danse.
My exposure to all these influences led to the creation of La Union Beladiri in which the cultural martial practices of South East Asia, primarily Filipino and Indonesian, blend with modern contexts.
